The October challenge is,“A child’s birthday-cake wish comes true with disastrous consequences.”
Challenge yourself to a thousand word goal. Use prompts as exercises in control. Tell your story, then evaluate it. Is it too long? Are you over the thousand word goal? What is the best way to trim it? Sometimes a single word can do the job of several. Upon rereading, do you find ‘extra’ information that you could lose and yet strengthen the story? Did you tell your tale and come up short of the word goal? This can be equally challenging. Where can you add to make the story fuller without bogging it down? These writing activities help you to see your story from different perspectives, which ultimately leads to better writing.
Have fun and good luck!
