“Write what you know.” It’s the old adage for writers, no matter what they’re writing. Samantha Hoffman led us through an exercise where we thought about a personal story from our lives. But – to add a twist – we wrote it a second time from a different perspective, changing from first person to third person. This was the first step to take what you know and transmogrify it into inspired fiction, similar to the process she went through to write her novel What More Could You Wish For. It was initially inspired by her life, ultimately it was just the jumping-off point.
