The book chosen for May’s read was Terry Brooks‘, The Sword of Shannara. This was the first book by Terry in a long list of fantasy novels. As is often the case, some of our group liked the book and some did not. The biggest complaint was the length, over 700 pages long. The story idea is reminiscent of King Arthur’s Sword, The Harry Potter series, and Lord of the Rings.
One of our readers enjoyed how the characters interacted with each other. Some liked the hefty descriptions. Some felt the point-of-view of the book was all over the place. Most of us had never experienced this type of fantasy before, so we weren’t really sure what to expect. A couple of us would like to read more of the series. So, if you want fantasy, pick up The Sword of Shannara and fantasize away.
The book was written 30 years ago by Terry Brooks, who graduated the same high school as I did, but was four years ahead of me. Not that that matters, but I just found it interesting.
