Return of the In Print Challenge

It’s 2017!
And the beginning of a new year always instills in us a desire to improve, to focus, and to be better. In that vein, we offer you an In Print Challenge.

The January IP Challenge:
Find your creative space. An office, a kitchen table, a library carrel, whatever suits you.
Sit down, relax, inhale deeply. Now look around.
This is where the magic happens. Become familiar with the environment.
Consider the light, the colors, the space available.

Comfortable?
Okay, now write.
By hand, on a laptop, keyboard, clay tablet, etc.
Write whatever comes to mind.
Start a new project. Continue a scene from an existing project. Babble through a laundry list of excuses as to why you don’t feel like writing. Go ahead and type, “this is stupid”.
It’s not stupid. It’s the Challenge.

Write for ten minutes straight. Here’s an online timer.

You probably haven’t written in a while. Those distracting holidays consumed most of your time. You’re probably out of the habit.

Write for ten minutes more.

That’s it. You’ve completed the challenge. Congratulations.
Sometimes it takes us twenty minutes of forced writing to find our way, our voice, our story.

REPEAT AS NEEDED

January’s Challenge is to reestablish your writing habit.
2017 is unfolding before you and it holds much literary promise, don’t waste a moment of it.

WNIJ Flash Fiction Contest

Attention Short Story WritersWNIJ logo

Enter the Flash Fiction Contest

WNIJ invites you to submit an original work of short fiction based on the following prompt:

To enter, write a short story of approximately 500 words responding to the prompt by the contest deadline: 11:59 p.m. on Monday, September 12. The authors of the winning entries will be invited to read their story on air during Morning Edition the week of October 3, 2016.

Word of Art 3D

If you attended the I AM IN PRINT Five Year Anniversary Celebration last March, then you know our big news… If not, drum roll please–

Word of Art 3D has been invited by the Burpee Museum of Natural History to participate in their 75th Anniversary celebration!

Festivities for Burpee will cover several months of features and activities and the Word of Art 3D reception will be held late winter/early spring of 2017.

We are so excited about this opportunity to further expand our creative collabortion. The Burpee Museum of Natural History is located at 737 North Main Street Rockford, IL, on the banks of the Rock River along the newly renovated Riverwalk. We hope you will check out Burpee, it’s histories, exhibits, and all it has to offer. It is the museum’s goal to “inspire all people to engage in a lifetime of discovery and learning about the natural world, through preservation and interpretation.” We encourage you to use this statement as inspiration for your submissions.

We will be collecting stories this fall, stay tuned for details and deadlines! Also, a reminder that this year we will be open to dimensional art. Ceramics, mosaics, jewelry, etc…

Congratulations to past participants who assisted in making this opportunity happen!

(I am so excited!)

Thank you,
Mary Lamphere

Join us for JanOWriMo

by Sharon Boehlefeld

JanOWriMoWhile several In Printers won NaNoWriMo this year, and several more took part, November just doesn’t work for some writers. At our second November meeting, the members of LS Writing Gals (fans of In Print, all) decided we could make a better effort after the holidays. So we decided to have a JanOWriMo of our own. JanOWriMo is January: Our Writing Month. And our motto is “We write after the holidays.”

We’re inviting everyone we know to take part in our writing marathon. There are no big prizes (so we’re no threat to NaNoWriMo), but there is no one-size-fits-all goal either. You pick your topic. You pick your goal. You win the priceless reward of having accomplished what you wanted to at the end of the month.

If you aren’t sure what you want to do, we’ll have a story cube prompt every day. Writing something based on a roll of the dice may open the doors of your own imagination and you won’t need them after a few days.

Find out more on our JanO Facebook page or blog.
